marquette data center rumor

Back in 2021, headlines suggested Marquette County could be getting a major data center at the former SAGE Command Center in Sawyer. - Data center proposed for former Air Force Command Center in Michigan - DCD (Article)

The proposal sounded impressive.

A former Cold War military facility. High-tech infrastructure. Future jobs. New investment.

Five years later, many residents may not even realize the project was ever announced.

That's because there is little public evidence that the proposed redevelopment ever became reality. Public reports described the project as being under contract and subject to approvals, financing, and due diligence. Years later, the SAGE building still appears available for lease or sale, and public records show discussions occurred but no final action was taken.

But maybe the better question isn't what happened.

Maybe the better question is:

Why were we supposed to want it in the first place?

Data centers are often marketed as economic development. Yet unlike manufacturing facilities, retail districts, housing developments, tourism destinations, or locally owned businesses, data centers employ relatively few people once construction is complete.

They consume land.

They consume electricity.

They consume infrastructure.

And increasingly, communities across Michigan and the country are pushing back. Residents have raised concerns about energy demand, utility costs, environmental impacts, tax incentives, and whether the promised economic benefits actually justify the footprint. Projects in multiple Michigan communities have faced organized opposition and regulatory challenges.

Marquette County's greatest strengths have never been server racks.

What WE need in Marquette County are people.

When a family moves here, starts a business, opens a restaurant, renovates a building, launches a service company, or creates local jobs, the economic impact spreads throughout the community.

A data center doesn't buy lunch downtown.

A data center doesn't attend community events.

A data center doesn't coach Little League.

A data center doesn't fill vacant storefronts.

A data center doesn't create a thriving local economy.

People do.

If Marquette County has millions of dollars available in incentives, infrastructure, attention, and political capital, perhaps those resources would generate greater returns by helping local entrepreneurs, workforce housing projects, redevelopment efforts, and community-focused businesses rather than chasing the latest technology trend.

The real opportunity isn't becoming a storage locker for someone else's data.

The real opportunity is building a place where people want to live, work, visit, and invest.

Marquette doesn't need a data center.

Marquette needs more Marquette.
